About Us – Diocese of Kinkiizi
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” – 1 Corinthians 15:58

🌟 Introduction
The Diocese of Kinkiizi stands as a beacon of faith, hope, and transformation in southwestern Uganda. Rooted in the Great East African Revival and nurtured by generations of faithful servants, we are more than a church—we are a growing family of believers committed to proclaiming Christ and uplifting communities.
Our story is one of resilience and renewal: from humble beginnings in 1915 at Kanungu’s King’s Court, to the vibrant Cathedral at Nyakatare today, the Diocese has become a spiritual home for thousands. With 11 Archdeaconries, 61 parishes, and nearly 200 congregations, we are united in one mission: to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ and demonstrate God’s love through practical service.
✝️ Our Mission
To proclaim the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ and to demonstrate the love of God through practical services relevant to people’s needs, so that all may enjoy the fullness of His salvation.
👁️ Our Vision
A sustainable, growing, Christ-centered church.
🎯 Our Goal
To provide holistic ministry and foster development that improves the quality of life for all people in Kanungu District and beyond.
📖 Our Heritage
Carved out of North Kigezi Diocese in 1995, Kinkiizi carries forward the revival spirit of the 1920s and 30s, when ordinary men and women—like Petero Rwabito and Rutatigirwa Eriya—gave land, started schools, and spread the gospel with passion. Their legacy lives on in our Cathedral at Nyakatare, our parishes, and our ministries that continue to transform lives.
🏛️ Background Information
(a) Brief History
The Diocese of Kinkiizi is one of the 37 dioceses in the Province of the Church of Uganda. It was carved out of North Kigezi Diocese on May 7th, 1995. Its roots trace back to the East African Revival of the 1920s–30s, when pioneers like Petero Rwabito and Rutatigirwa Eriya laid foundations of faith, education, and community service. The Diocese has since grown into 11 Archdeaconries, 61 parishes, and 195 congregations.
(b) Geographical Location, Size and Topography
Located in southwestern Uganda, the Diocese borders North Kigezi, Kigezi, Muhabura, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Covering 1,228 sq km, it features farmland, tropical forests, woodlands, and valleys, with peaks like Burimbi rising to 8,222 ft.
(c) Land Use
Agriculture dominates, though land fragmentation and soil degradation challenge productivity. Conservation areas include Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park. Small-scale fishing and limited mining (sand, clay, wolfram, gold) supplement livelihoods.
(d) Wildlife
The Diocese is home to diverse wildlife: mountain gorillas, elephants, buffaloes, climbing lions, Uganda cobs, and countless bird species. Protected areas include national parks, game reserves, and forest reserves.
(e) Infrastructure
Roads remain largely marrum, but the Diocese hosts guest houses, hotels, tourist camps, and two airstrips (Kayonza/Ishasha and Kihihi). These facilities support both ministry and tourism.
(f) Climate and Water Bodies
The Diocese enjoys a tropical climate with bimodal rainfall (March–May, September–December). Rivers Ishasha, Nchwera, Kiruruma, Birira, and Lake Edward provide water resources.
(g) Population and People
Kanungu District has a population of about 220,500, with the Bakiga as the largest ethnic group, alongside Bafumbira, Bahororo, and Batwa. Anglicans number approximately 100,000, forming the heart of diocesan life.
