Rutenga Archdeaconry: Our History, Heritage, and Ministry

Welcome to the official page of Rutenga Archdeaconry, one of the foundational pillars of the Diocese of Kinkiizi (Church of Uganda). Nestled amidst the majestic, rolling landscapes of Kanungu District, Rutenga stands out not only for its breathtaking geography but for its deep-rooted spiritual heritage, born out of the historic East African Revival.
As a vital administrative and evangelical hub within the diocese, Rutenga Archdeaconry is committed to providing a holistic ministry—nurturing the spiritual maturity of our flock while driving sustainable community development under the leadership of our Diocesan Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Dan Zoreka.
Currently this archdeaconry is led by Ven. Justus Tukwasibwe
Historical Background and Heritage
The history of Rutenga Archdeaconry is inextricably linked to the broader expansion of the Anglican faith in the Kigezi region. The gospel first took deep root in Kinkiizi during the spiritual awakenings of the 1920s and 1930s. Driven by the fire of the Great East African Revival, early native pioneers and evangelists traversed the rugged terrain to spread the good news of Jesus Christ.
From Roots to Autonomous Status
Originally, the local churches in Rutenga fell under the mother Diocese of Kigezi (established in 1967), and later North Kigezi Diocese when it was carved out in 1981.
When the Diocese of Kinkiizi was formally inaugurated on May 7, 1995, with the late Rt. Rev. Can. John Ntegyereize as its first Bishop, Rutenga was positioned as one of the cornerstone archdeaconries. The faith that began under humble grass-roofed structures has blossomed into a vibrant network of parishes and local congregations that continue to anchor the community today.
Geography and Environment
Rutenga Archdeaconry boasts some of the highest and most scenic elevations in the entire diocese. It is defined by its dramatic, mountainous terrain and lush green ridges.
A Unique Peak: The archdeaconry features the highest point in the region—the Burimbi Peak of Mafuga, which towers at an elevation of 8,222 feet above sea level. This is closely accompanied by other prominent peaks like Kirenzi, sitting at 1,675 meters.
The bimodal tropical climate brings fertile rainfall to our communities, shaping a landscape heavily dominated by small-scale farmlands, scenic woodlands, and proximity to southwestern Uganda’s famous protected forest reserves.
People, Livelihoods, and Holistic Ministry
The Christians of Rutenga Archdeaconry are predominantly Bakiga, known for their resilience, hard work, and deep commitment to the Church.
Economic Life
The primary economic driver within the archdeaconry is agriculture. Our hillsides are alive with the cultivation of essential food crops such as bananas, beans, sweet potatoes, and maize. In addition, the region’s climate is well-suited for cash crop production, particularly tea and coffee, alongside localized forestry initiatives.
Community & Social Transformation
In alignment with the Diocese of Kinkiizi’s mission to provide “practical services relevant to people’s needs,” Rutenga Archdeaconry is a critical partner in local socio-economic development. The Church heavily invests in:
- Education: Managing several Church-founded primary and secondary schools to raise up the next generation of morally upright and intellectually equipped leaders.
- Health & Empowerment: Partnering with diocesan departments to champion community health, clean water access, and the economic empowerment of families through the Mothers’ Union, Fathers’ Union, and Christian youth groups.
Our Vision and Mission Forward
Standing firmly on the evangelical foundations laid by our forefathers, Rutenga Archdeaconry continues to move forward with a bold vision for the future.
- Our Mission: To proclaim the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ, teaching the Word of God faithfully, and serving our community so that all may experience the fullness of His salvation.
- Our Goal: To build a self-sustaining, deeply rooted, and Christ-centered community where spiritual revival meets tangible, life-changing development.
We warmly invite you to partner with us, visit our beautiful parishes, or join us in worship whenever you travel through the highlands of Kanungu. To God be the Glory!
